Super Bowl LIX – Who to bet on and best value plays
Keep in mind, that only two of the last 10 Super Bowl champions were the betting favorites entering the postseason (2022 Chiefs, 2016 Patriots). Five of the last seven winners weren’t in the top three in odds.
The Super Bowl favorites
The overall betting favorite is the Detroit Lions at +300 with our Betrivers code NJBRV. They are led by a dynamic offense that has scored at least 40 points six times this season, tied for the most in a single season in NFL history. Detroit ended the season averaging an NFL-leading 33.2 points per game and scored at least 30 points in 5 straight games to close out the season and had 30 points in 10 games this season.
Injuries have been a problem on the defensive side, but the Lions can still win a shootout with their offense. Detroit was tied with the Colts for the most points per game allowed in December but in their 31-9 season-ending win over Minnesota, which clinched the No. 1 overall NFC seed, their defense can step up when needed, holding the Vikings to just nine points.
Two-time defending champion and the AFC’s No. 1 seed, Kansas City is still the AFC favorite, with odds of +350 at ESPN Bet. This isn’t the most dominant Chiefs team, finishing with a +59 point differential this season, which is the worst by a team with at least 14 wins in a season in the Super Bowl era. Even with that, the Chiefs are still dangerous. They own one of the best defenses in the NFL, giving up just 19.2 points per game, fourth-best in the league. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce lead the Chiefs offense, which means the Chiefs can’t be counted out. However, they have not scored more than 30 points in a game once this season.
The Value Plays
The Buffalo Bills are led by MVP candidate Josh Allen and running back James Cook, and offer great value at +550 to capture their first-ever Super Bowl. As dominant as the Lions offense was in the NFC, Buffalo was the top-scoring team in the AFC, scoring 30.9 points per game. If Buffalo is going to win their first Super Bowl it’s going to be behind their offense, which is good enough to win it all.
Baltimore is +550 at bet365 Sports and has played pretty well down the stretch, winning the AFC North. Their offense is one of the best in the NFL led by their rushing attack with Derrick Henry and quarterback Lamar Jackson, they finished the regular season with 3,189 rush yards, the second-most in a season in NFL history.
Jackson is an MVP candidate Lamar after setting career-highs in Pass TD, passing yards, yards per attempt, and touchdown-to-interception ratio. He also had a 119.6 passer rating this season, fourth best in NFL history. The Ravens’ defense has been an issue but has been better in recent weeks. The one thing Jackson hasn’t been able to do is win in the playoffs going 2-4 in six postseason games.
The biggest challenge to Detroit in the NFC is Philadelphia, who is +650 at Fanduel NJ. The Eagles have a dangerous offense with Saquaon Barkley who rushed for over 2,000 yards, A.J. Brown had 1,079 yards and DeVonta Smith had 833 and eight scores.
The one question with the Eagles offense might be quarterback Jalen Hurts, who had a fine season but missed most of the final three games with a concussion. The Eagles do boost maybe the best defense in the playoffs and that makes them an attractive team to bet on. Jalen Carter, Zack Baun, and Quinyon Mitchell give them three top-level players on defense, which might be the difference in the NFC field.
The Longshots
After the five teams listed above there still is some value in a wide-open field
- Minnesota enters the playoff coming off a tough loss but has a solid defense and plenty of weapons on offense with Justin Jefferson leading the way.
- Green Bay won last year on the road as a No. 7 seed and has plenty of talent on offense with Jordan Love and Josh Jacobs and a deep wide receiving group.
- Tampa Bay has a dangerous offense led by Baker Mayfield, who finished with 41 Passing TDs this season, the second most in Buccaneers history (Tom Brady, 43 in 2 021), and running back Bucky Irving, who had 1,514 scrimmage yards this season.
- The Chargers have one of the tougher defenses in the league, but might not have enough offense to make a deep run.
- LA’s other team, the Rams, has plenty of weapons on offense and a veteran, Super Bowl-winning QB in Matthew Stafford. Their defense is young but talented. They might be able to pull off an upset, but would be surprising to see them make it to New Orleans.
- Washington is led by rookie QB Jayden Daniels, who is likely the Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Commanders won 12 games for the first time since 1991 and could be a dangerous out if Daniels and his favorite wide receiver Terry McLaurin are on their games. The Commanders are seeking their first playoff victory since the 2005 Wild Card round.
The Long, Long Shots
These three teams have odds of 75-1 to win the Super Bowl, but each of them has something to consider., according to various NJ betting sites.
- Denver has a solid defense, which ranks second in the NFL in pressure percentage and rookie QB Bo Nix has given life to their offense.
- The Texans have been one of the bigger disappointments this season, but they still have back-to-back 10-win seasons for the third time in franchise history. QB C.J. Stroud took a bit of a step back, losing multiple weapons this season, including Stefon Diggs, who is done for the season.
- Pittsburgh is limping into the playoffs on a four-game losing streak, scoring 17 points or less in all four games.

Thoughts and Super Bowl LIX Prediction
If you are looking for the best value plays, take the Bills (+550) and the Eagles (+650), both teams have an excellent chance to win the Super Bowl this year and offer enough value to make it worth your while.
If you want one of the favorites, it’s hard to bet against the defending champs, but I will go with Detroit, they seem like they are on a mission this season to win their first-ever Super Bowl. Of the long shots, I like Tampa Bay, they are a dangerous team and offer some really enticing odds at 25-1.
