Golf’s third major The U.S. Open is just weeks away.
With the two previous majors being won by two of the biggest names in golf, that being Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. It is going to be very interesting to see if a big name will be hoisting The U.S. Open Championship Trophy, or will we be getting some new blood on the major championship list.

Things to know about the 2025 U.S. Open Championship
This year’s edition of the U.S. Open will be played at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania. This is the 10th time that Oakmont is hosting the U.S. Open. Oakmont is notoriously known for having some of the toughest and deepest rough to play out of, the rough being topped off at five inches thick. In 2016 the last time Oakmont hosted, Dustin Johnson won the tournament with a score of -4. This year, Oakmont is looking to make scores even lower than that and make this tournament as hard as it can be.
The Favorites
To the surprise of nobody, Scottie Scheffler is coming in as the favorite to win this year’s tournament. Scheffler, just coming off of picking up his third career major with a win at the PGA Championship is now just halfway to completing the career grand slam which only six other golfers have achieved. Scheffler’s best finish at the Open is T-2 in 2022 where he fell to Matt Fitzpatrick by just one stroke.
With just getting his second leg of the career grand slam it is only a matter of time before he gets the third leg and it might be right now. No one since Tiger Woods has had that fear factor of seeing their name rise up the leaderboard during a tournament. Scottie Scheffler now has that factor, and if he is in contention on Sunday there is a good chance he is walking away with hardware.
Rory McIlroy
Tournaments recently have just been flip flopping favorites between Scottie Scheffler and this man Rory McIlroy. As previously mentioned, there are only six golfers to complete the career grand slam in the history of golf. And Rory is the most recent recipient of the accomplishment with his most recent major victory this year at The Masters. McIlroy has won a U.S. Open Championship before back in 2011 and has been runner up the past two years. So is this the time finally where Rory reclaims The U.S. Open Championship Trophy, there is a good chance of it with him playing some of his best golf he’s played in recent time.
Long Shots
Maybe not so much of a long shot but his odds are so high even though he is the third favorite to win the whole thing at +1100 he could be considered a long shot. That of course being last year’s winner, and two time U.S. Open Championship winner Bryson DeChambeau. The big long ball hitter has been playing real good golf all season and has been in contention on Sunday to win at both of the majors this year. The only problem that could come up is with the really tall rough, DeChambeau is not the best with his irons and if his drives go a bit wild it could be really tough treading for DeChambeau.
At +1600 the man that took the golf world by storm at last year’s Masters tournament is Ludvig Åberg. Åberg is looking to capture his first career major victory and always seems to turn it on whenever he is competing at a major. The world ranked number 6 player in the world has not been playing his best golf recently, but does have a win under his belt this season that did take place at a previous U.S. Open venue. And if Åberg has proved anything, it is on a Sunday at a major his name will be floating around the top of the leaderboard looking to strike.
As I have previously written about in November to take a look at to win the Open is Dustin Johnson at +5000 odds. The former winner at Oakmont Country Club has been in a bit of a slump with missing the cut at this year’s Masters and PGA Championship, but with already winning The U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, you cannot count out the former world number 1.
Thoughts & 2025 U.S. Open Championship Betting Predictions
According to the sportsbooks it is a two horse race between Scheffler and McIlroy. But there is a ton of talent in this field that I did not even mention in this article like Rahm, Woo Lee, and Fleetwood.
If you want a safe option to go with it is definitely one of the two favorites Scheffler or McIlroy.
If you are looking for more of a longshot to go with I think DeChambeau and Åberg are really good candidates to take home the trophy. I would go with Åberg because of how well he performs when the lights are the brightest and it is just a matter of time before he wins his first career major.
