New Jersey has more ways to bet a horse than most racing states, and fewer apps than you might expect. For two decades a single platform, 4NJBets, held the state's online pari-mutuel market on its own. That changed in July 2026, when NYRA Bets went live alongside it. Add fixed-odds betting, which Monmouth Park was the first US track to offer, plus the Meadowlands and six off-track sites, and the picture is more complicated than a list of logos.

NYRA Bets is the first real alternative to 4NJBets in two decades, and it arrives with strong credentials: it's run by the New York Racing Association and now manages New Jersey's whole online wagering system.
This page covers which apps are legal, how pari-mutuel and fixed odds differ in practice, and where to bet in person.
New Jersey has three legal ways to bet horses online: two pari-mutuel apps and one fixed-odds app.
4NJBets is run by ODS Technologies, better known as TVG, which is owned by FanDuel. From 2005 until July 2026 it was the only online pari-mutuel option in New Jersey. It runs under the state’s account wagering system, which is licensed to the NJ Sports and Exposition Authority and regulated by the New Jersey Racing Commission.
Its strength is coverage. The 4NJBets app streams races in HD from more than 150 tracks, including Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands, with free replays, past performances, FanDuel TV and TVG analysts’ picks. It’s rated 4.8 from 8,952 App Store ratings. Android users bet through the mobile site.
The 4NJBets welcome offer is up to $200 back as credit if your first single-horse bet loses. BetCash, PayNearMe and cash at selected tracks are free ways to deposit, but cards cost $5 a time. Accounts are for New Jersey residents.

NYRA Bets, from the New York Racing Association, went live in New Jersey in July 2026 after approval from the Attorney General and the New Jersey Racing Commission. It’s also the managing vendor of the state’s whole online wagering system, chosen by Darby Development, which runs Monmouth Park, so any new racing app needs its sign-off. Wagers are processed by United Tote through a hub in Cherry Hill.
NYRA Bets New Jersey charges no wagering transaction fees and offers free funding. It’s built for fans of New York racing, with handicapping analysis for every race at Saratoga, Belmont and Aqueduct, horse-by-horse replays and multiple video feeds, including the paddock. One account works on the app, online and on-track at NYRA venues. It also sponsors the Haskell, which Baby Vino won at 28-1 in 2026.
The NYRA Bets NJ welcome offer is up to $200 in new-member bonuses.

MonmouthBets is Monmouth Park’s fixed-odds app, built on BetMakers technology. Monmouth took the first fixed-odds horse racing bets in the US on May 7, 2022, on self-service terminals at the track, and the MonmouthBets app followed in May 2023 with approval from the Division of Gaming Enforcement.
The difference from 4NJBets and NYRA Bets is the payout. You take a fixed price on win, place or show, and that’s what you’re paid, however the pools move afterwards. Markets open up to 24 hours before post at tracks around the world, including the Haskell at Monmouth. The app includes a form guide with past performances, a Speed Map and live video of every race it offers.
You must be 18 and physically in New Jersey to bet. You can also bet fixed odds in person at Monmouth Park. Bets are win, place and show only, so most players keep a pari-mutuel app as well for exactas, trifectas and Pick 4s.
Online horse betting in New Jersey runs through the state’s account wagering system, set up under the Off-Track and Account Wagering Act of 2001 and regulated by the New Jersey Racing Commission. The NJ Sports and Exposition Authority holds the license. Its agent, Darby Development, which runs Monmouth Park, chose NYRA Bets to manage the system, and any new app needs approval from NYRA Bets, Darby and the Commission before it can take NJ bets.
That’s why the list is short:
| App | Bet type | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 4NJBets | Pari-mutuel | Run by FanDuel’s TVG. The only online option in NJ for years, and still the most familiar to local players. |
| NYRA Bets | Pari-mutuel | Launched in NJ in July 2026, processed through a United Tote hub in Cherry Hill. Sponsor of the Haskell. |
| MonmouthBets | Fixed odds | Monmouth Park’s own fixed-odds app, built on BetMakers technology. |
National racebooks you may see advertised elsewhere, such as TwinSpires, AmWager, DRF Bets or Xpressbet, are not approved for New Jersey. If an app lets you deposit from Hoboken but isn’t on this list, close it.
Most US racing is pari-mutuel. Every dollar bet on a race goes into a pool, the track takes its cut, and the rest is shared among the winning tickets. The odds on the tote board move right up to the off, so the 6-1 you liked ten minutes before post can be 4-1 by the time the gates open, and late money can still move it after the off. You find out your price after the race starts.
Fixed odds work like a sportsbook. You take a price, and that’s what you get paid, however the money moves afterwards. New Jersey signed its Fixed-Odds Wagering Act in August 2021, and Monmouth Park took the first fixed-odds bets on May 7, 2022, making it the first US track to offer them.
Which is better depends on the horse. Pari-mutuel pools tend to pay more on longshots the crowd ignores; fixed odds protect you when you’ve spotted a horse early and expect the money to follow. Serious players in New Jersey often use both: a fixed price on a horse they expect to shorten, and the pools for exactas, trifectas and Pick 4s, which fixed-odds apps don’t offer in the same depth.
Eighteen. New Jersey’s racing age is lower than the 21 required for casinos and sportsbooks, which is why a 19-year-old can bet the Haskell at Monmouth but can’t open a sportsbook app. As with every NJ gambling app, you must be physically in the state when you place the bet.
A couple of miles from the Jersey Shore beaches, Monmouth runs a summer thoroughbred meet from May to September, with roughly 50 race days and a stakes program built around the Haskell Stakes in July. The Haskell is a Grade I, $1 million race for three-year-olds and regularly draws horses from the Triple Crown trail. The 2026 edition went to Baby Vino at 28-1, a reminder of why pool betting on the Haskell can pay. NJ Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line stops at the track on race days. See our Monmouth Park guide.
The Meadowlands is the center of North American harness racing, with more than 100 dates a year starting in January. For decades its biggest day was the Hambletonian, the most important race for three-year-old trotters. Apex won the 2026 running in a record 1:49.2, and from 2027 the race moves to Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Indiana. The Meadowlands Pace in July remains its signature event. In the fall, Monmouth moves a short all-turf thoroughbred meet to the Meadowlands, raced under the lights. See our Meadowlands guide.
Freehold, which dated to 1854 and was described as the oldest racetrack in the country, ran its last card on December 28, 2024. Pages that still list it as an active track are out of date. Its history is in our Freehold Raceway guide.
If you’d rather bet at a counter and watch on a big screen, the Racing Commission lists six off-track wagering (OTW) sites:
In Atlantic City, the BetMGM race and sportsbook at Borgata also takes simulcast racing.
Through 4NJBets or NYRA Bets you can bet the full national calendar: the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the Breeders’ Cup, Saratoga and Del Mar summers, plus international racing on selected cards. Locally, mark the Haskell at Monmouth in July, the biggest on-track crowd of the New Jersey year, and the Meadowlands Pace.
