Ranking: Best and Worst College Football Uniforms

There’s nothing quite like college football season. Whether you’re an alumnus excited to watch your alma mater play, you enjoy a classic college tailgate, or you just love Saturday afternoons on the couch, there’s something special about college football games!

One element of college football that fans enjoy is the uniforms. Some teams are known for their historic colors or recognizable helmets, while others might not be as popular. NJ.Bet, an online gambling sites comparison platform, surveyed more than 800 Americans to find which college uniform reigns supreme in the NCAA Division I.

Because there are so many variations of uniforms a college team can have, this analysis sticks to one of the most well-known color uniforms that each Power 5 conference team has as of 2023.

Best College Football Uniforms

Roll Tide! It’s no surprise that one of the most popular (and winningest) college football teams in NCAA Division I also has the best-looking football uniform. Football fans clearly love the crimson and white of Alabama. Louisiana State University’s (LSU) classic purple and gold comes in second, followed by the well-known Carolina blue of the Tar Heels.

Rounding out the top for best uniforms includes the Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Michigan Wolverines, Arkansas Razorbacks, Vanderbilt Commodores, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins, and reigning national champs the Georgia Bulldogs. While Georgia beat Alabama in 2022, Alabama’s uniform bested the Bulldogs.

What about the worst uniforms in college football? At the bottom of the rankings are the Oregon State Beavers. The Oregon Ducks also rank in the bottom five, as well as the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Maryland Terrapins, and Iowa State Cyclones.

Top Uniforms in Each Conference

Even if a team doesn’t rank as the best (or worst) overall out of all the NCAA Division I Power 5 conference teams, it doesn’t mean they aren’t popular within their own conference.

In the SEC, Alabama’s uniform is first with a score of 3.58 out of 5, followed by LSU (3.51), Auburn (3.47), Arkansas (3.4), and Vanderbilt (3.39).

In the Big Ten, Michigan’s maize and blue tops the list with a score of 3.42, followed by Purdue (3.32), Michigan State (3.27), Iowa (3.19), and Northwestern (3.18).

In the Big 12, with a score of 3.27, the Kansas State Wildcats come in at #1. Following Kansas State is BYU (3.25), Kansas (3.22), West Virginia (3.19), and Cincinnati (3.16).

In the ACC, the Tar Heels are first with a score of 3.48, followed by Florida State (3.42), Wake Forest (3.22), Duke (3.2), and Louisville (3.17).

In the Pac-12, UCLA tops the list with a score of 3.39, followed by the California Golden Bears (3.37), Arizona Wildcats (3.24), Washington Huskies (3.2), and the Utah Utes (3.19).

Best and Worst Team Colors

A look at the best and worst colors of college football uniforms  - study from NJ.Bet

While the North Carolina Tar Heels’ uniforms rank in the top three, the school’s colors top the list for best team colors. People love that blue!

Despite ranking as the second-worst uniform, the colors of the Oregon Ducks rank second-best. Following Oregon for best colors are Alabama, Colorado, and LSU.

What about the worst colors? The Utah Utes rank last for team colors. Other undesirable team colors include Syracuse, Ole Miss, Missouri, and Mississippi State.

Uniforms and the Appeal

What is the most important part of a uniform regarding its appearance? - study from NJ.Bet

For the majority of respondents (66%), the colors of a team are the single most important factor when it comes to uniform appeal. Uniform design is another important factor.

How often should college football teams be updating their uniforms? 43% of respondents say uniforms should be updated once every 5 years. When those uniforms are updated, 3 in 10 say they’ll buy a new jersey. Hopefully, those updated uniforms are attractive!

Methodology

In June 2023, we surveyed 805 Americans to get their feedback and opinions on college football uniforms for teams in the Power 5 conferences. Respondents were 44% female and 56% male, with an age range of 18 to 75 and an average age of 41.
