This year we have an interesting cast of players competing in the derby this year.
Pete Alonso, who won the event back in 2019 and 2021, and has hit more home runs than any other player in derby history. While he might have the best HR Derby pedigre, there is some serious talent in this years field – so who has the best odds and opportunity to gain some summer fame?
Here’s my best bet and my fun longshot play.
My best value play is Adolis Garcia.
Not only will he be doing the derby in his home stadium, but he has a ton of pop with 17 home runs this season for the Rangers. Alonso might be the flashy bet because of his home run abilities, but for me Garcia at +400 is a very sneaky play that can go a long way. We’ll see if he has some extra juice by playing in front of his hometown fans at Globe Life Field.
Longshot Play: Alec Bohm
My longshot play is Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm. Bohm, who has 11 home runs this season, does not come off as one of those stereotypical home run hitters, and for that exact reason is why at +2000 I feel there can be some value. He has a very consistent sweet swing, and if he can get in a groove, he can pop a bunch of home runs.
Rule Changes Impact
Keep in mind that the Home Run Derby rule changes. With these new rule changes, the playing field is wide open. Let’s be honest, who is really “practicing” for the derby? It’s meant to be a fun, entertaining event that gets the fans excited about the All-Star festivities.
With that being said, for the sportsbooks to have someone at +2000, in this case, Alec Bohm, for an event that is wide open with these rule changes, I believe it is worth a sprinkle. It’s meant to be a longshot play for a reason, but we have no idea how these players will react to the night.
For me, Adolis Garcia is the safe play at +400 with a ton of value playing in his home stadium in front of his hometown fans.
The guy I like at +575 is Baltimore’s Gunner Henderson. Henderson, 23, is the leading home run hitter in the Derby currently at 27, and his left-handed swing should play with at Globe Life Field, which is 374 in the power alley and 326 down the line. For those reasons, if I am betting on this event, I’ll take the kid.
For the longshot, I think it is worth sprinkling some money on Alec Bohm. He is not a traditional home run hitter, but has the pop to shock some people. At +2000 with an entirely new format, Bohm could definitely make some magic happen in the Lone Star State during the Home Run Derby.
