Tropicana Atlantic City is the big resort at the south end of the Boardwalk. It has more than 2,300 rooms in five towers, The Quarter, an indoor dining and shopping street styled after old Havana, and the only poker room left on the Boardwalk.
Caesars Entertainment runs the casino, and Gaming and Leisure Properties owns the real estate. In 2025 its casino floor won $216.8 million from gamblers, fifth among Atlantic City’s nine casinos, according to New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement figures.
History and ownership
Tropicana stands on the site of the Ambassador Hotel, built in 1919. Ramada bought the closed hotel in 1978, reused only its steel frame and opened the casino on November 23, 1981, with 521 rooms. It took the Tropicana name after Ramada bought the Las Vegas Tropicana, and was branded TropWorld from 1988 until the mid-1990s.
The resort grew in stages. The Quarter and the Havana Tower opened in November 2004, after a parking garage under construction collapsed in October 2003 and killed four workers. In 2007 New Jersey regulators refused to renew the license of then-owner Columbia Sussex, and a trustee ran the property until a creditor group led by Carl Icahn took over in 2010. In 2018 Gaming and Leisure Properties bought the real estate and Eldorado Resorts took over operations. Eldorado became Caesars Entertainment in 2020, and Tropicana moved to the Caesars Rewards program.
The ownership story is not finished. In May 2026 Caesars agreed to be acquired by Fertitta Entertainment, owner of the Golden Nugget, in a $17.6 billion deal. It needs approval from New Jersey regulators and others before it can close.
Hotel
The rooms are spread over five towers:
| Tower | Rooms | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| North Tower | 521 | The original 1981 tower |
| South Tower | 379 | Home of the main lobby |
| Solana Tower | 604 | The former West Tower, fully renovated and reopened in early 2026 |
| Havana Tower | 502 | Opened with The Quarter in 2004 |
| Chelsea Tower | 358 | The former Chelsea hotel, joined to the resort in 2018 by a skybridge |
The Solana Tower is the big recent change. Caesars renovated all 604 rooms and suites in the old West Tower and took bookings for stays from January 2026. The design borrows from Tropicana’s Palm Walk, with soft wood, tropical prints and new artwork.
Casino
Tropicana’s casino has slots, table games and the Gridiron Pit, a football-themed table games area that opened near the sportsbook in September 2025.
Poker room
Tropicana runs the only live poker room on the Boardwalk. The others are in the Marina District at Borgata and Harrah’s. The room runs cash games and promotions through the year.
Sportsbook
The retail Caesars Sportsbook is on the casino floor, near the Gridiron Pit. It opened as a William Hill sportsbook in 2018 and took the Caesars name after Caesars bought William Hill.
Online casino
Tropicana’s license is one of the busier ones online. In 2025 its internet gaming win was $254.0 million, fourth among New Jersey licensees. Brands under it as of 2026 include:
- Caesars Palace Online Casino. See our Caesars Palace Online Casino review.
