Betting Futures for NFL Defensive Player of the Year: Top Picks and Dark Horses

The NFL is back, we recently took a look at the odds for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award, so let’s flip it over and take a look at the betting favorites to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

T.J. Watt

T.J. Watt is at the top of the list and deservedly so. Widely considered as one of the best edge rushers in the entire league, last year Watt had a league-leading 19 sacks with a career-high 68 total tackles. Watt seems to be the guy who can take over a game and win a game for the Steelers.

Anytime the defense needs to get off of the field to get the offense back out there, Watt always seems to be the guy to get the big sack on third down. Watt will be looking to win his second Defensive Player of the Year award in his eighth NFL season.

Tied for first on the list is Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. Parsons really is a Swiss army knife, but it will be interesting to see how new Cowboys defnesive coordinator Mike Zimmer uses him.

Dan Quinn

Former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who is now in Washington, used Parsons all over the field, resulting in a career-high 14 sacks last season with 64 total tackles. The Cowboys decided to pick up Parsons’s fifth-year player option but you know that Parson is going to be gunning to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Adding a Defensive Player of the Year award this year will certainly add to his case to get the bag.

Nick Bosa

Third on the list is the 2022 award winner, 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa. Bosa had 10.5 sacks last season, which was a major drop-off from his award-winning season. Bosa also had 53 total tackles. Bosa’s numbers dropped significantly last year but still was a dominant force that offensive coordinators had to prepare for every week.

Bosa did not attend OTA’s, minicamps, or even training camp, which could have contributed to his numbers dipping. This season though Bosa is back at camp and could be a big bounce-back season.

Maxx Crosby

Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders comes in at number four on DraftKings list. Last year he notched a career-high 14.5 sacks to go along with a career-high 90 total tackles. Having a real breakout season last year Crosby is going to be looking to replicate his upward trajectory this season and adding this award puts him in another tier.

With Antonio Pierce now becoming the head coach in Las Vegas and another season with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Crosby could have another tremendous season in the Raiders defense.

Myles Garrett

Fifth on DraftKings list is last year’s winner Cleveland Browns defensive end, Myles Garrett. Last year Garrett won the award with 14 sacks, 42 total tackles, and four forced fumbles. Garrett is one of the most unstoppable forces in the entire league and the Browns have a very good defense around him, making him a strong candidate to win the award again,

Last on the list here is third-year stud Aidan Hutchinson from the Detroit Lions. In his first two seasons, Hutchinson has 21 sacks, 103 total tackles, three forced fumbles, and even four interceptions. Hutchinson is looking to have a huge year going into year with the Lions one of the NFC favorites.

If Hutchinson has a big year and the Lions are at the top of the standings, he offers tremendous value in the Defensive Player of the Year betting market.

Our NFL DPOY Betting Pick: Aidan Hutchinson’s Rising Potential

Any bet that you take here is not a bad bet, I think unlike the Offensive Player of the Year award there is a lot of opportunity for dark horses to emerge here.

All six of these guys have the ability to win this award with ease but the one guy that I would put money on would be the favorite T.J. Watt from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Watt is going to look to grab his second award and I believe he is going to have better numbers than his already ridiculous numbers from last season and prove that he should have won it last year and should be going for back to back awards.

NFL DPOY Darkhorse

For the value play here, I am going with Hutchinson at +1000.  The Lions are a very good team, and with him leading the way entering his third season, I’ll take my chances that he emerges at the top of this list in 2024.
